School Organization and Roles



The Faculty organizes its work through committees and is supported by the Administrative Faculty and the Pedagogical Chair.
The committees in operation are:
  • Leadership Team—responsible for policy writing and review, committee oversight, and programmatic decision making. Consists of six faculty members, three standing (School Director, Pedagogical Chair, and a member of the Triad), and three rotating members with two year terms. A lengthier description is below.
  • Hiring Committee—responsible for receiving and vetting applications for open positions, scheduling and holding interviews, and presenting a recommendation for final decision to the Leadership Team.
  • Social Inclusion Committee—for the 2011-12 school year, this committee is responsible for facilitating the discussion of diversity within the faculty, for researching diversity programs and initiatives in other schools, and for forming a process/plan for next steps in BWS’s diversity work.  Works to maintain and improve the social health of the student body.
  • Festival Planning Committee—responsible for planning and oversight of festivals, creating new systems as needed.
  • Educational Support Committee—supports the Educational Support teacher and all students by providing special programs or recommendations to students who would benefit from those.
  • Pedagogical Committee—supports the faculty professional development process. Responsible for scheduling and following up on faculty evaluations. Responsible for providing recommendations to the Leadership Team regarding special circumstances hires or faculty dismissals.

The chart below shows membership in faculty committees.  The Hiring Committee and Pedagogical Committee are mandated by the Leadership Team. Members of the Leadership Team are selected by the faculty.  The Hiring, Social Inclusion, and Education Support Committees are formed on a voluntary basis--faculty members join a committee they have interest in and skills for.  The Pedagogical Committee members are selected based on teaching experience.  The Pedagogical Chair and School Director are standing members of both the Pedagogical Committee and the Leadership Team. 
Leadership Team

The Leadership Team is composed of members of the teaching faculty and administrative faculty. Standing members are the School Director, the Pedagogical Development Chair, and a member of the Faculty Triad. Rotating members serve for two successive years and there are three rotating member positions. Among the responsibilities assigned to the Leadership Team are: 
  • Along with the School Director, maintain compliance with Board policies
  • Hiring/firing/personnel matters 
  • Professional Development
  • Policy decision-making with faculty consultation
  • Committee oversight
  • Long term planning 

Responsibilities of the Pedagogical Chair and the School Director

Pedagogical Chair
The Pedagogical Chair works in cooperation with the faculty to ensure the quality of education at Bright Water School. The Chair ensures that quality professional development, program development, school policies and procedures as they relate to the students, curriculum standards and teacher and parent resources are created and maintained. This position requires extensive experience as a Waldorf Teacher and strong administrative skills.  This position is the Chair of the Pedagogical Committee.

School Director
The School Director reports to the Board of Trustees and is responsible for ensuring that the Executive Limitations are adhered to and that the necessary work is done to achieve the Ends/Results Polices. The School Director also oversees the work of the administrative faculty and the overall operations of the school and represents the school to outside organizations.   The School Director is a member of the Social Inclusion Committee, the Pedagogical Committee, and the Education Support Committee.  The Director is the Chair of the Leadership Team and the Hiring Committee.
